VETERINARY HOSPITAL
At West Coast Vets, our small animal reproduction services are designed to support breeders and pet owners through every stage of the breeding journey.
From pre-breeding health assessments and fertility planning to pregnancy monitoring and whelping support. We combine advanced diagnostics tools to optimise breeding outcomes. Whether you're an experienced breeder or exploring breeding for the first time, we're here to offer trusted advice and comprehensive care every step of the way.

Breeding Consultation: Required prior to any breeding services for new patients. This ensures all patients are fit for breeding, and allows discussion regarding any relevant health screening tests. $99
Hip and Elbow Scoring: We offer both PennHIP and ANKC scoring. All prices include anaesthetic fee and specialist report.
PennHip $1100
ANKC Hips OR Elbows only $880
ANKC Hips AND Elbows combined $990
Ovulation Timing: We offer in-house progesterone testing which provides accurate results within 15 minutes. This can also be used to time elective c-sections. We may also perform vaginal cytology to assist in timing the oestrus cycle. Please call ahead to make an appointment. Progesterone testing $90 Vaginal cytology $30 We may also wish to add in LH (luteinising hormone) testing to narrow down fertile window further. The cost for this is $102, and will be discussed on a case by case basis.
Pre-mating Swabs: We may wish to perform a pre-mating swab to work up any infertility, or for peace of mind to know she is in optimal health for breeding. Pre-mating swab $176
Artificial Insemination: We offer standing insemination and transcervical insemination. Standing insemination involves collecting from the dog before depositing the fresh semen into the vagina of the bitch with a special pipette. Transcervical insemination is a procedure whereby semen is deposited directly into the uterus under endoscopic (video) guidance. This is a fast, non-invasive procedure that requires no anaesthetic. It can be used with fresh, chilled, and frozen-thawed semen, and offers excellent conception rates. Standing AI $132 (+ collection $165) TCI $660 (fresh or frozen) includes collection.
Semen Collection: Collection - including basic in house analysis of motility and concentration $165 Canine collection and semen freezing fee $935 + $50 enrolment fee

Breeding Q&A
with our team vets
Dr Codie Doak-Smith
When or why are c-sections performed?

I love caesareans! We perform both elective (planned) and emergency caesareans at WCVH. With planned caesareans these are commonly due to a very small or very large litter size or larger foetuses. Emergency caesareans are perfomed because of maternal fatigue, issues with uterine contractions and/or puppy distress. Signs of these include green discharge, increased time between puppies/kittens, or weaker contractions. We can also check puppies/kittens heartrates using the ultrasound. If you are new to breeding or are unsure, we are always happy to discuss whats happening over the phone and see if there is anything to be concerned about.
What makes a caesarean successful — and how do we give newborn's the best possible start?

Teamwork and efficiency. Once we have determined a caesarean is indicated, we aim to get those babies out as quick and safely as possible. We have oxygen in front of mum while we are preparing her for surgery, and follow the latest gold standard guidelines for anaesthesia, pain relief and puppy/kitten resuscitation. While the vet is getting puppies/kittens out, it is all hands on deck to take them to the warm bench and get them dry and awake. It is the best thing in the world hearing those first squeals and mews from the surgery theatre! Every vet here gets taught how to do caesareans from day 1; in fact I think I performed more caesareans in my first 6 months of work here than routine speys!
