What is Epididymal Flush?

An epididymal flush in stallions is a specialised reproductive procedure used to collect sperm directly from the epididymis—the structure attached to the testicle where sperm mature. It’s most commonly performed when:

• A stallion has died unexpectedly

• A stallion needs to be gelded urgently

• Or a testicle must be surgically removed due to injury or disease.

This allows valuable genetics to be saved when normal semen collection isn’t possible.

How an Epididymal Flush Works

1. The testicle and epididymis are removed under GA whilst the stallion is castrated.

2. The epididymal tail—where most mature sperm are stored—is isolated.

3. A specialised solution (often a semen extender) is flushed through the tubules, washing sperm out.

4. The recovered sperm-rich fluid is filtered, evaluated, concentrated and prepared.

5. The sperm is then frozen in straws and stored for future breeding, just like standard frozen semen.

Often used in high-value or performance stallions.

Key Notes

• The success rate varies depending on the stallion’s health and reproductive status at the time.

• Frozen semen from an epididymal flush can often be of similar quality to standard frozen semen.

• Timing is important—the sooner the flush is done after castration or death, the better the sperm viability.
